Frances Ha: Another Moving On Film Worth Watching by the Young Ones
Why was I enthralled by this film by Noah Baumbach? I think it's probably due to very close similarities to some good people I know whose characters (or characterizations based on real life characters) have been presented in this movie. The principal character's named 'Frances Ha' and she's an artist (doing dance, which is probably the most challenging field of the arts that an artist may want to pursue) who continues to develop and share her art and craft to those willing to watch her perform, allow her to perform, and grant her their time to grow and develop as an artist. But a lot of practical realities in life get in the way of her life such that she seemed unable to bring her art to the fore. People around her mistake her for somebody else, other than being a dance artist. Most probably, these people have their own share of troubles themselves with what they want to do with their respective lives. And we the viewers get enthralled (or annoyed) with what they do on the big screen.
And I'm glad the protagonist decided to let go of her frustrations and failures in her young life. Other characters I've known in real life have given up when they come to face similar situations. But Frances kept on going. She has learned to face her ghosts (her seeming inability to know what she wants with her life, given all distractions coming her way) and move on. She gets a job that would probably give logistical support for her to pursue her dance projects. She realizes she has to pay her accumulated debts. She has to let go of the disturbing attachment she has with her girlfriend (no, they're not lesbians, and I'm not saying this because I've something against lesbianism). She starts again to build her life. And I secretly hoped she would become accomplished in due time, as I ended watching the movie.
If you're young (or still young at heart), watch this. It'll be worth your time, especially if you have dreams or have dreamt of leading an artistic lifestyle amidst the lives of others around you whom you know are among the least happiest people you've come to meet. You'll feel blessed as you are in good company: you'll realize you still have the time (plus the energy, as you're still young!) and can always change your gears if you decide to finally have the focus and that quintessential discipline to pursue to completion whatever projects/goals you have in mind now. The others around you will simply just ignore you or put you down----just leave and run as quick as you can and start doing your work now.
